League One club part ways with long-serving manager

Cambridge United sack Mark Bonner after Lincoln City defeat

After Cambridge parted company with Mark Bonner, Ian Evatt is now among the top ten longest-serving managers in English football’s top four divisions.

The 3-0 home loss to Lincoln on Tuesday night proved to be the final straw for Bonner, who was appointed in March 2020.

Majority owner Paul Barry lauded Bonner for his accomplishments throughout his time, but believes a change is in the best interests of the club in the long run.

“I want to start by simply saying this – Mark Bonner will rightly go down as one of the most important people in Cambridge United’s history,” said an official statement.

“All of us – owners, board of directors, staff, players, and fans – understand how fortunate we have been to have him and how difficult this decision has been.”

“Over the last five years, Cambridge United has made enormous strides on and off the pitch, and Mark has been instrumental in laying strong foundations for the future, creating special memories and moments for all of us along the way.”

“He has done it through his leadership and energy, his coaching talent, natural communication and empathy, and his desire to push the club forward on and off the pitch as a Cambridge native who genuinely cares about our city and its communities.”

“However, in football, sometimes you have to make difficult decisions that you believe are right for the club’s long-term future.”

“Given our recent performances and results, we all feel – owners and board – that this is the right moment to part company with Mark, with huge respect, admiration and acknowledgement for all we have achieved together.”

This weekend, Cambridge will play Fleetwood in the FA Cup second round. Barry Corr will be there take interim charge of the side while the club carries out its search for a new boss.
