Luton handed contract boost ahead of Bolton Wanderers tie’

Luton winger Andros Townsend has signed a new long-term contract ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Wanderers.

The former Tottenham and Everton man joined the Hatters on a free transfer in the summer and has made an immediate impression at Kenilworth Road, scoring in a 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The 32-year-old, who trained with Burnley in pre-season but did not sign a contract with the Clarets, faced an uncertain future before being rescued by Luton Town.

“Three months ago, I thought my career was over,” he said, according to the club’s official website. “From begging for a trial all over the world to being offered a longer contract is a dream come true.”

“It’s a one-of-a-kind football club.” This season, I believe we can accomplish something very remarkable. We’re only halfway through, and we have six months – 19 games – to pull off the unthinkable.”

Rob Edwards praised Townsend’s attitude and believes the wideman’s experience has helped the team.

“It’s a fantastic signing for us; Andros has entered the group with true humility and professionalism.”

“He has demonstrated to the entire group what it means to be elite and a top-tier pro.” His fitness levels have been extraordinary, and with each game, he has demonstrated more and more of his abilities.

“It’s a credit to him that we were able to tie him down to a longer-term contract.” He has been through a difficult period, which says a lot about him as a person.

“I also think it says a lot about this football club’s ambitions that we’re signing people like that Andros, with his level and quality, so it is a big signing for us.”

Luton Town are coming off a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Chelsea, despite goals from Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo.
