Celtics forward found guilty in healthcare fraud scheme U.S. Attorney Damian released a statement

Former Celtics big man Glen Davis was found guilty on Wednesday on charges related to a scheme defrauding the NBA’s healthcare system. Davis and former NBA guard Will Bynum were both found guilty in federal court for taking part in a theme that created fake claims for dental and medical procedures.

Although Davis might spend up to 20 years in prison, numerous reports indicate that he will probably serve significantly less time behind bars. Terrence Williams, a different former Celtics player, was the scheme’s mastermind and was given a ten-year prison term earlier this year. Among the eighteen former players implicated in the conspiracy were Tony Allen and Sebastian Telfair, two former Boston guards. Allen entered a guilty plea back in August and was given a sentence of three years probation and community service. Telfair’s sentence is still pending.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams released a statement Wednesday after Davis and Bynum were found guilty.

The announcement read, “Former NBA players Ronald Glen Davis and William Bynum were found guilty by a Manhattan jury of a criminal scheme to defraud the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan.” “The behaviour of the more than 20 defendants found guilty in this case was a typical fraudulent scheme intended to swindle the NBA’s health care plan and net the defendants over $5 million in illicit profits, despite the fact that several of them were well-known NBA stars. The conviction of today serves as an example that anyone found guilty of fraud is subject to criminal prosecution regardless of their level of popularity or achievement in sports or any other industry.

With the Celtics for the first four years of his NBA career, Davis won an NBA championship in his debut season in 2008. Before playing the most of his career with the Magic and Clippers, he was an integral part of the team’s 2010 NBA Finals run. Over the last five years, he has encountered the law several times.
