Bradford City faces huge task to keep Jamie Walker

Graham Alexander views the Scot as a key figure in their plans after the club triggered a year’s extension in his current deal.

Walker finished the last campaign with three goals in his final two outings to take his tally to nine.

But his absence after being injured in a bad tackle just before Christmas coincided with a run of eight games without a win for the Bantams.

Walker has missed chunks of action since making his initial loan move from Hearts permanent in the summer of 2022.

In that time, he has participated in 63 games, but Alexander hopes to find a method to play more frequently without losing his aggressive edge.

“I continue to think there are actions you can take,” the City manager remarked.I assure you that no player desires to sustain an injury.

Muscle injuries are occasionally something you can prevent. It can also be contact injuries.

However, I still believe that you can build strength, resilience, and a stronger body—especially if you’re as dedicated to the game as Jamie is.”Both in and out of possession, he shows no hesitation. He simply puts his body in danger since he doesn’t sense fear.

But you have to take every precaution to safeguard your body if you want to be that kind of player.

“We’ve discussed trying to assist on that side with Jamie. We most definitely don’t want to substitute him on the field.

Walker’s combative style is a valuable asset for a club that has had trouble converting opportunities into goals. In 2023–2024, the city had the seventh-lowest

Alexander has no intention of playing it safe in an attempt to minimize their most potent offensive weapon.

“We want to maintain that competitive edge and him in his ideal football player form.

“We just want to let Jamie know that you will occasionally experience this, so how can we keep you safe?

How can we supplement your diet, exercise regimen, and daily routine to assist you resist some of the blows you’re about to take?

“We’re not looking to alter him as a player. We are thrilled to have him.

“We can constantly work to enhance some aspects with each and every player. We see Jamie there while they are being identified.

“I don’t think I’m going to help him be a better attacking player. He’s got all those attributes.

“But I can do something about trying to help him protect his body for many years.

“That’s an ongoing process with Jamie but he’s fully committed to it, which is great news.”

Only Andy Cook and Tyler Smith scored more last term than Walker, who also provided five assists.

His extended absence mid-season, and the inevitable time afterwards it took him to get back to his sharpest, were more factors to add to the “ifs and buts” argument after City finished a point adrift of the play-offs.

“I want Jamie available for 46 games, and I know he does,” Alexander continued. He is a football player who adores the game.

“As you age, your body changes, so you have to add stuff. I had to adjust my regimen when I was 27 or 28.”You have to go with the flow and remain open-minded about what you can adjust to improve.”

“My main goal as a player was to get on that pitch at all costs.

“I know Jamie is the same animal, but there was nothing worse for me than not being out there.”

“Let’s do whatever it takes to get him onto that field each and every week.”
