Three dead in early-morning Bradford County crash

PAUL ATHENS TWP, WETM — As a result of a single-car collision in Athens Township that halted traffic for the majority of the morning, three individuals are dead in Bradford County.

Three persons were killed in a crash on Monday , September 16, at 2:39 a.m., when their car lost control and collided with two parked trucks while traveling south on Riverside Drive alongside the Susquehanna River, according to the Athens Township Police Department.

According to the police, the car was traveling swiftly when it lost control and collided with a parked car.

A silver vehicle struck a Ford utility pickup truck, causing damage to the front, then knocked a second white pickup truck parked behind it down an embankment close to the river, according to witness accounts and images.

The truck owners told 18 News that after hearing the collision, they went outside to see their cars totaled and the sedan on its side.

Speaking with nearby residents and other onlookers, they asserted that the car lost control due to a significant incline on the road.
The sunken road was apparent from a distance as the dip was located just up the road from the crash site. Because of how poor the road conditions were, motorists were observed avoiding the area while they were at the scene.

Residents said the road has been an issue for several years, even saying they avoid it when coming home.

One resident told 18 News she thinks people go too fast on Riverside Drive, and when mixing speed and the damaged road in the dark it would make sense if that’s what caused the crash.

Residents said that cones were put up on Tuesday to make drivers aware that the road is damaged, along with placing a flashing light on a sign reading “BUMP” to add more warning.

The names of the individuals have not been released yet, with police saying they will be available when the families of the victims are contacted.

The crash investigation is ongoing, and 18 News will update this story when more information becomes available.
