£5.3m Bristol City transfer worth every penny

Jonathan Kodjia 2.0? £5.3m Bristol City transfer was worth every penny

When Bristol City parted ways with Jonathan Kodjia, they made the bargain transfer of Famara Diedhou, who was arguably worth every penny

Despite departing Bristol City, Kodjia and Diedhiou became fans’ favourites since they scored important goals for the team.
Both players left the BCFC and made an impact in various leagues, albeit having less successful post-BCFC careers.
Diedhiou’s acquisition proved to be a wise choice for Bristol City in the end because he fit the team well.

In the middle to late 2010s, Bristol City developed a reputation for fielding players that “streets won’t forget,” including a youthful Tammy Abraham, a towering Aden Flint, and an enthusiastic Joe Bryan.

Even so, among die-hard Championship football fans, two strikers from the West Country side are arguably the most well-known.

Though he didn’t stay at Bs3 for long, Jonathan Kodjia had such an impact that many wondered if Famara Diedhiou, who signed for £5.3 million, could become Kodjia 2.0.

However, there was no reason to worry because the Senegalized turned out to be worth the cost.

Jonathan Kodjia’s blistering spell in Bristol

As previously noted, Kodjia was only at the Robins for one full season (2015)–16, but he left a lasting impression.

Although Aaron Wilbraham led the team to promotion from League One the previous season, they believed that more firepower was required due to the divisional change. As a result, a reported £2 million was paid to sign the Frenchman.

He had come to England off the back of a great season in the Ligue 2 with Angers SCO. In 29 games he had scored 15 goals and collected the division’s player of the year award after his great goalscoring form had fired his side to promotion.

Arriving at Ashton Gate, he quickly became accustomed to starting alongside the large frame of Wilbraham and made good on the promise he arrived with from France, scoring in only his second game for the club, a 4-2 home defeat to Brentford.

Throughout the season, he would maintain decent goalscoring form for the Robins and keep his starting spot alongside a rotating second striking option containing the likes of Wilbraham and Lee Tomlin among others. Overall, in his fantastic season at Ashton Gate, he scored 20 goals, helping the club stay up in the Championship.

But following a shock relegation for Aston Villa from the Premier League at the end of 2015-16, City’s star man was soon poached, not without the Robins making a healthy profit though. He left the Robins four games into 16/17 for a reported initial fee of £11m.
