Bristol City boss says one Owls decision left him ‘scratching’ his head defeat’

Sheffield Wednesday picked up their third win in four games yesterday as they beat Bristol City 2-1 at Hillsborough.

The Owls came within three points of safety thanks to another brace from top player Ike Ugbo, who took home all three points.

It was the forward’s fifth goal in as many games for Danny Rohl’s team, and he has shown himself to be the key to a fantastic run of play for a struggling team.

Di’Shon Bernard’s red card didn’t stop Sheffield Wednesday from winning all three points, but Bristol City will feel badly treated as a late penalty appeal went unheeded.

The ball appeared to have struck a Sheffield Wednesday player’s hand inside the box, therefore the Robins requested a spot-kick; however, referee Thomas Kirk waved it away, giving the hosts the advantageanother victory.

Liam Manning was left questioning the ‘integrity of the competition’ following their defeat on the road.

“There was an appeal for a penalty,” the Sheffield Star reports the head coach of the Robins stated in a statement to the media.

To be honest, I haven’t seen that back. I do find some of the events puzzling; was it really just an extra five minutes? There is no extra time for goal kicks or throw-ins at the beginning of the season, which affects the competition’s fairness in my opinion. It is 10 minutes. I’m baffled by some of the choices I witnessed today.

What do Sheffield Wednesday need to do now?

With so many players circling the ball and things moving so quickly, it was difficult to determine whether Bristol City should have been awarded a penalty, so it wasn’t shocking that one wasn’t.

Despite this setback, Sheffield Wednesday will not let it stop them from securing a crucial nine points so far this month.

If the Owls defeat relegation rivals Rotherham United the next weekend, they might tie QPR on points; otherwise, their weak goal differential might be the only thing keeping them in the bottom three.

In their next games, Danny Rohl’s team must aim for maximum points against The Millers and Plymouth Argyle, since their next games against Leeds United and Ipswich Town could be crucial for them to make mistakes.

The Yorkshire team is in a crucial stage of the season and cannot afford to restrict their winning streak to a small number of games.
