Bristol City striker contract ambition

Nahki Wells has remained a constant and consistent figure in the Bristol City squad

Nahki Wells, a striker for Bristol City, is adamant that he still has a significant and crucial role to play for the Robins. He thinks that a strong campaign the following season will allow him to stay in the West Country even longer.

Arriving in January 2020, Wells is the longest-serving member of the team aside from those who completed the academy while still in school. He is gearing up for his sixth season with City.

The 34-year-old Bermudian celebrated his birthday over the weekend, making him the most seasoned player in Liam Manning’s squad after Andy King retired. He is one of just two players in his 30s in the first team, the other being defender Kal Naismith.

Wells’ contract is set to expire in the summer of 2023, but it appears he will be around for 2024–2025 given the amount of uncertainty surrounding the striker position as the transfer window draws near. He was granted an extension at the end of 2022.

Wells, who started 19 games in his 41 appearances the previous season, is generally considered to be City’s second-choice forward going into 2024–25. However, depending on what occurs during preseason, he might start as high as fourth.

Due to Tommy Conway’s contract predicament, City will probably have to sell him unless the 21-year-old accepts new terms. In that case, Manning would only have access to Wells and Seb Palmer-Houlden, who is back on loan.

Of course, City is also looking for a new No. 9, and considering the expected investment in the job, this will likely force Wells into a supporting role—one that he has progressively taken on as his BS3 career has evolved.
Speaking to the Royal Gazette in his native country, Wells disclosed that he had “positive” conversations about his future at the club with Manning during the end of the previous campaign.

Tommy Conway’s contract situation means that City will likely have to sell him unless he agrees to new terms. Conway is 21 years old. If that’s the case, Manning’s only options would be Wells and the loaned-back Seb Palmer-Houlden.

Naturally, City is also searching for a new No. 9, and given the anticipated investment in the position, this will probably compel Wells to assume a supporting role, which he has gradually assumed as his BS3 career has progressed.
Speaking to the Royal Gazette in his home nation, Wells revealed that at the conclusion of the previous season, he had “positive” discussions with Manning over his future at the club.
