Bristol City won’t ever forget star’s impact even after exit

Andreas Weimann moved to Ashton Gate in 2018 and became a modern-day legend at Bristol City

Andreas Weimann’s versatility and attacking ability helped Bristol City over his six-year tenure, leaving a lasting impression.
Weimann has had a dip in performance in recent seasons, but he is still a valuable free agency option for Championship and possibly international teams.
This summer, there should be interest in signing the Austrian attacker due to his remarkable record of 51 goals and 29 assists in 216 appearances.

Andreas Weimann’s six-year spell as a Bristol City player came to an end this summer and Robins’ supporters will have plenty of fond memories of the Austrian international.

For just £2 million in 2018, the adaptable offensive midfielder from Derby County came, and it turned out to be a great deal as the Austrian would stay in BS3 until recently, however he did spend the second half of the 2023–24 season on loan at West Brom.

The 32-year-old is currently a free agent, and while it’s unclear where he’ll be playing football when the 2024–2025 season arrives, it’s safe to say that the Ashton Gate supporters will be cheering for him with open arms the following year.

Andreas Weimann became a modern-day legend at Bristol City

Weimann, who is Austrian, has a great deal of English football experience before coming to Ashton Gate. He started out at Aston Villa in 2007 and advanced through the ranks to play in the first team before transferring to Derby County in 2015.

In the summer of 2018, Bristol City, then led by Lee Johnson, paid £2 million to acquire Weimann after he spent three years with the Rams. It’s safe to say they got good value for their money.

The former Villa player played 216 games for the Robins overall, securing their place in the Championship as a competitive, mid-table squad.

Weimann had the perfect start to his tenure at Ashton Gate, scoring goals in his opening two matches against Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest to set the tone for his stay there.
With the exception of the 2020–21 season, in which he played in just eight games due to injury, the Austrian was a mainstay on the team roster and cemented his place among the top attacking players in the division in the 2021/22 campaign, in which he finished with 22 goals and ten assists in 46 league games.

The Austrian’s colleagues at Bristol City gave him the leadership after Dan Bentley left the squad in January 2023, demonstrating how highly regarded he was there.

Weimann’s 2023–24 season at Bristol City may not have gone as expected, as he began to witness a decline in playing time. Before going on loan to West Brom in January of last season, he only managed one goal and one assist.

Though his discharge did not follow a perfect story, Ashton Gate will always hold special memories for the 32-year-old. His contract expired recently.
