Bristol City’s £50 million ambition, now linked to Manchester United*

Due to his links to a move to Manchester United, Rodrigo Muniz was never a realistic goal for Bristol City.
Rodrigo Muniz, a target for Bristol City, appears unlikely to move to the Championship after finding success for Fulham in the Premier League. The 22-year-old, who struggled to stick up trees in his prior campaigns, has suddenly found success for Fulham this season. He signed a five-year contract with the London club in 2021 after leaving Brazilian team Flamengo. After only five goals in his Championship debut season, he had a dismal loan spell at Middlesbrough when he scored only twice.

When Muniz was having trouble getting playing time at Fulham, he was linked to a loan transfer to Bristol City in January. He stayed at his parent club after the transfer window closed, hence this move never happened. Game time was awarded to him for his dedication, and the Brazilian went on an incredible run of form.

He scored eight goals between February and April after netting his first Premier League goal against Burnley in February. In ten games for the Cottagers, he scored eight goals. This has increased interest in the player, who may end up leaving the team at the end of the season.

Following his stellar play for Fulham, Muniz has been connected to a summer transfer to Manchester United.

The club wants to sign the forward, according to GiveMeSport, but the £50 million price tag that is being mentioned will be extremely expensive for the Red Devils. The club will be wary of spending large sums of money on players who haven’t yet established themselves as Premier League stars after the high-profile acquisitions of players like Antony and Jadon Sancho in recent years.

But the massive salaries of players like Raphael Varane and Antony Martial, who are expected to depart the team on free transfers in the summer, will not be coming into the United pay budget. This increases United’s flexibility in the transfer market and raises the likelihood that Muniz will fetch a bid of £50 million.

But after spending £72 million to acquire Rasmus Hojlund in the summer, the club might not be best served by adding another young attacker. Erik Ten Hag, nevertheless, will have been impressed by his eight goals for Fulham thus far, and he may try to sign the forward after the season is over.

The forward’s £50 million asking price has eliminated The Robins from their chances of signing him.

At any level, let alone the Championship, paying £50 million on a player is simply unthinkable. The club’s record signing was Tomas Kalas, who cost less than £8 million.

Even if they could afford the dues, Muniz’s chances of becoming a member of the club were slim. Fulham’s striking force is not particularly strong. In the league, they have only scored 47 goals, with eight of those goals coming from Muniz in the previous ten games.

They still had a danger of getting dragged into a relegation battle, so losing him would have been a major blow to their arsenal and a risk.

Furthermore, Muniz’s desire to return to the Championship after stints with Boro and Fulham seems improbable. The transfer to United seemed far more realistic, despite any obstacles that a £50 million price tag would provide. For the Robins, the move to Bristol City was a pipe dream.
