Adam Webster joined Bristol City as a replacement for Aden Flint in the summer of 2018, his season at Ashton Gate proved a successful one

His 2018–19 season performances earned him a transfer to Brighton, a Premier League team. Almost five years later, he remains with the Seagulls, who have solidified their status as one of the nation’s best-run teams.

Webster proved to be a very wise addition for Bristol City, even though fans would have preferred to have seen more of him at Ashton Gate because they gained money on him when he left for Brighton.

Bristol City demonstrated how Championship clubs can nurture great players before moving them on for big money, a sustainable business model for clubs, when they sold Webster for an alleged fee of £20 million. This was a significant quantity of money that the club was able to add to their coffers.

Adam Webster’s time at Bristol City

The centre back cost £3.5 million when he signed with the team in the summer of 2018 from Ipswich Town, a Championship team. However, based on a number of stipulations, that amount may potentially increase to £8 million, as reported by The Guardian.

Although paying up to £8 million is a significant sum of money for a Championship team, Robins manager Lee Johnson looks back and believes he made the right choice in signing the 23-year-old.

Although Webster had played 29 games for Ipswich the season before, he had experienced injury problems, so paying such a high fee to recruit him was undoubtedly risky.

Nevertheless, Webster flourished at Bristol City, where he quickly established himself as the team’s first-choice center-back and forged a strong alliance with Tomas Kalas.

After Aden Flint left for Middlesbrough in the summer of 2018, Webster was signed. Webster was brought in to replace Flint, who had appeared in every game for the Robins in the 2017–18 season and needed to be replaced.

Throughout the 2018–19 season, Webster made a total of 47 appearances for the Robins and scored three goals.

After he established himself as one of the league’s top centre backs, Premier League teams had to take an interest in Bristol City’s player.
Webster demonstrated his remarkable play for the Robins by winning the club’s player of the season title for the 2018–19 campaign and earning a spot on Quest’s team of the season in the EFL.

Webster averaged 2.1 interceptions and 1.4 tackles per game while maintaining 11 clean sheets at the Championship level, according to Sofascore, with a season-long average of 7.13.

His spell at Bristol City proved himself as one of the league’s best defenders and Webster will always be fondly remembered at Ashton Gate.

Adam Webster’s move to Brighton

Graham Potter was clearly a big fan of Webster after facing him in the Championship the previous season, as seen by the record-breaking £20 million move that Webster made to Brighton.

During his time as Swansea’s manager in the 2018–19 campaign, Potter’s team lost 1-0 and 2-0 against Bristol City and failed to score a goal against Webster.

“He is a quality defender, comfortable on the ball, and fits the profile of the player we want to bring to the club,” the former Brighton manager said in an interview with the BBC.
