Michael Carrick’s ‘paid the price’ verdict after defeat to Bristol City’

Michael Carrick’s verdict after Middlesbrough lost 2-1 to Bristol City

Michael Carrick said Middlesbrough’s paid the price for another poor start as they lost 2-1 to Bristol Coty and lost further ground on the Championship top-six.

Leapfrogged by Bristol City to actually drop into the bottom half, same old problems cost Boro as they conceded two sloppy goals within two minutes in the first half. And despite turning the momentum of the game in the second half, they ultimately couldn’t find that clinical touch to fire themselves back into the game early enough

Sammy Silvera’s goal in the 91st minute cut the deficit that Jason Knight and Matty James’s goals had set in half, but it was also extremely fortunate that Finn Azaz’s meek attempt found its way into the net and found the Australian. Boro trailed the play-off spots by six points, but it was too little, too late.
In response, Carrick stated: “Given the game’s beginning, I still believe there was enough to have gained something from it based on how the boys played and the game progressed.” Ultimately, our poor start proved to be a costly mistake.

“We paid the price with two quick goals because we didn’t really look like us. That undoubtedly provides them a huge advantage in the game, but I felt the boys really demonstrated their spirit after that. Even though it’s not easy in those situations, I thought the boys played with a lot of character.

“They played some excellent football toward the end and occasionally gave off a menacing vibe. We seemed to have ended the first half well, generating a few opportunities. I simply felt that the boys continued to look like themselves throughout the second half. We also had a few opportunities early in the second half, which has the power to totally alter the outcome of the match.

“You are depending on those who advance to give you the motivation to pursue the game a little bit further when you are chasing it. In essence, we paid the price for our poor start and were unable to fully recover. They set us up for failure, but it didn’t work out. Ultimately, it was excessive.”

One of the main reasons why Boro improved during the game was the adjustment Carrick made about thirty minutes in. After starting with Lewis O’Brien in midfield and Hayden Hackney at ten again, he changed the two midway through the game. Hackney moved into his more comfortable midfield role, while O’Brien played wide left and Azaz moved into the middle.

Regarding that modification, Carrick remarked, “I just felt like we were second-guessing ourselves a lot and we didn’t quite have that natural instinct to our play.” Not as an individual, but as a group. We looked better after making that switch since it provided us a little more balance. We played better in the second half and completed the first half stronger.”
