The manager of Bristol Rovers, Matt Taylor, has provided an explanation for the team’s lack of acquisition during the January transfer window.
It appears that the Gas need new faces in the building more than ever after a run of four losses on the bounce. Following their Tuesday night loss to Exeter City, Taylor’s team drops to 14th place and is being overtaken by several teams that are in lower leagues.
Current data has demonstrated why new names are required. In each of those games, Rovers have been lifeless, and depth does seem to be a problem given the lack of a viable “plan B.”
Any prospects of making the playoffs now appear to have evaporated, as the team is 15 points ahead of Oxford United in sixth place. Though the season for Bristol Rovers is far from done, it appears that preparing for next season is the best course of action.
That might really have an impact on Taylor’s transfer plans for this window; he might decide to combine youth and experience. It is difficult to determine the precise plan at this time because there are no signs in the window.
Not that they haven’t tried; the manager reports that they have been passed over a few times this window and that they came very close to being the first name to be called in January.
Although he is aware that adjustments are necessary, Taylor discussed his objectives for the remainder of the season in an interview with the Bristol Post.
“With this bunch, we need assistance with bodies. I want to take on more tasks. That seems like a reasonable assessment. I doubt any Bristol Rovers fans would deny that there are certain positions on that pitch which we want to improve but actually can’t.
As I believe I’ve mentioned previously, we’re catching up. We’re responding to this market reactively, which means it takes longer than you would want and regrettably permits other teams to get involved since there isn’t a system in place to look for and put those names on the table. That is all there is to it. Once you’ve identified a good player, you’ll undoubtedly discover that there are five or six others in the market who can work harder than you.
That’s where we are, then. We haven’t added a player this window for that reason alone, but we’re doing everything we can to try.”
The Gas need a few new faces in January, and their current configuration nicely illustrates why. Taylor is
Not that he’s under pressure just yet, but after five defeats in their previous six games, he’ll be hoping to get back on track.
Play-off hopes appear to have vanished, and it appears that focusing on the future is the best course of action. Given their decline in comparison to their rivals, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Rovers among the busiest teams in the last week of the transfer market.
