Bristol Rovers goalkeeper joins League Two side on emergency loan deal

The goalkeeper lost his number one credentials at the start of the season to Brentford loanee Matt Cox

Bristol Rovers goalkeeper James Belshaw has joined League Two side Forest Green Rovers on a seven-day emergency loan deal after the Gloucestershire outfit saw number one stopper Luke Daniels pick up a knock against Notts County last weekend.

The fourth-tier outfit play Morcambe at home this afternoon as well as travelling to Stockport County on Tuesday evening with Belshaw eligible for both fixtures.

Having been the Gas’ first choice ‘keeper for the past two seasons, the 32-year-old lost his number one credentials over the summer with the arrival of 20-year-old Matt Cox on loan from Brentford.James Belshaw (@jbelly31) / X

The Englishman subsequently looked to move elsewhere with game time looking set to be limited which forced manager Joey Barton to keep the goalkeeper out of his matchday squads until the transfer window ended.

Belshaw was a pivotal member of Rovers’ 2021/22 promotion season, winning the club’s player of the year award whilst also being a great ambassador off the pitch with his work with the Community Trust.

It is likely that summer signing Matt Hall will return to the bench for this afternoon’s match at Peterborough United as well as the home game against Port Vale on Tuesday evening with the 20-year-old still waiting for his Gas debut.
