Bristol Rovers are expected to have a busy summer transfer window with additions in the final third a priority
Bristol Rovers are interested in signing AFC Wimbledon attacker Ronan Curtis on a free transfer, Bristol Live understands, with the 28-year-old’s future at the League Two club uncertain.
Discussions between the winger and the Dons are ongoing after he arrived on a short-term contract in January after being released by Portsmouth last summer. Curtis had not played since February 2023 due to major ligament injuries to both knees, but he impressed for Johnnie Jackson’s team in the second part of the League Two season.
Capped seven times by the Republic of Ireland, the wide man scored five goals and assisted twice in 16 league games for the fourth-tier club, which lost out on the play-offs by five points. However, Gasheads are likely to to be more familiar with his contributions at Pompey.
Curtis made 226 appearances for the Hampshire club, scoring 57 goals and providing 42 assists over the course of five seasons, all of which at League One level.
Although Wimbledon are determined to keep the winger in south London after earning legendary status in the Dons’ 1-0 triumph over arch rivals MK Dons with a 94th-minute winner, Rovers aren’t the only third-tier club interested in him.
Prior to his major knee injury, Curtis was attracting Championship attention as the winger approached the end of his contract at Fratton Park, but he has had to grind his way back into the game after an 11-month absence.
The Gas are anticipated to be active during the summer transfer window after six loanees returned to their parent clubs and seven were released, while Scott Sinclair, Jordan Rossiter, and Luca Hoole have been given contracts but their futures are unknown.
Matt Taylor will undoubtedly want to add more goals from wide areas as part of Rovers’ recruitment, and Curtis provides the Gas with a difficult winger with a great record in front of goal at League One level. Pace is another attribute that the Rovers manager has expressed a desire to see more of, and the Ireland international was well-known for his quickness at Portsmouth.
The Gas have gotten seven goals and nine assists from Luke Thomas this season while they wait for Sinclair’s decision, though there is quiet confidence that the veteran attacker will sign.
However, they are losing depth given by Chelsea and Hull City loanees Harvey Vale and Harry Vaughan as they return to their parent clubs, making it an area of the pitch that is in need of fresh faces.
