Bristol Rovers land transfer West Brom’s £3m midfielder

Before the end of the month, Bristol Rovers have the opportunity to add more players.
The South London Press reports that Romaine Sawyers will join Bristol Rovers after leaving AFC Wimbledon. The player will soon be available for a free transfer to the Memorial Ground thanks to the Gas.

At the age of 33, Sawyers has made 449 appearances and scored 35 goals throughout his career. Even as recently as 2021, he was playing for West Brom in the Premier League.

He will provide Bristol Rovers greater midfield depth and competitiveness if they close the deal. He would also give their team some much-needed experience as they try to maintain their position in League One.

“It’s a good fit for me – a young manager and squad that is trying to push in the right direction,” he remarked after joining the fourth-tier team earlier this winter. We currently have some injuries, but I believe we have the talent needed to improve after Wimbledon almost missed out on the playoffs the previous season.

After a few months without a club, it feels nice for me personally to be able to resume playing. During the hectic Christmas season, I want to come in and use my experience to help the boys achieve some results.

“Having served as a club captain in the past, I like to think it comes naturally to me to assist others and give guidance because I’ve played at this level and the three above it. In practice and on game days, I’ll try to provide that.

“The Club can confirm that Romaine Sawyers has departed to pursue a new challenge,” the Dons wrote in a statement posted on their website after he left. This comes after talks between the midfield player and the Dons after Romaine’s prior one-month contract expired.

During his time at Wimbledon, Romaine made five appearances and scored in our most recent 2-1 victory over Newport County. The entire Club wishes Romaine the best of luck in his future and appreciates his efforts during his tenure at Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Sawyers is a Saint Kitts and Nevis international with 49 caps under his belt. He started his career at West Brom and rose up through their academy ranks before loan spells away at Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Walsall.

He later had permanent periods with Brentford, West Brom, and Cardiff City after joining the latter on a permanent basis in 2013. After luring him back to the Midlands, the Baggies paid £3 million to sign him.

The man from Birmingham is looking forward to a new challenge at Bristol Rovers. The Gas recovered admirably from their defeat to Leyton Orient with a 1-0 victory away to Cambridge United last time out. They won three points against the U’s thanks to a goal from winger Luke Thomas.
