Bristol Rovers midfielder earns national team call-up for the first time

Kamil Conteh has been called up to Sierra Leone’s national squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Djibouti and Burkina Faso next month.

With eight caps, it’s the first time the Bristol Rovers midfielder has represented his country since March of last year, having missed the previous four squads, which included qualifiers against Ethiopia and Egypt, which they drew 0-0 and lost 2-0, respectively.

The Leone Stars sit fourth in Group A with one point from those two games before facing Djibouti at home and Burkina Faso away on June 5 and 10, respectively.

The latest squad also includes former Liverpool defender Steven Caulker, recently released Cheltenham Town centre-back Curtis Davies and Charlton Athletic striker Daniel Kanu amongst others.

Conteh has impressed since joining Rovers from Grimsby Town in January, quickly adjusting to life in League One after playing in League Two and the National League for the previous year and a half.

The former Watford junior player joined Grimsby from Middlesbrough in July after impressing on loan at Gateshead in the fifth division during the 2022/23 season, and his stock has risen significantly, with the Gas understood to have paid around £300,000 for his services.

The 21-year-old has made 17 appearances and is clearly a potential player, but he has demonstrated outstanding defensive ability deep in midfield and is undoubtedly an asset that supporters are excited about.

This is a Rovers player’s second call-up, following Jed Ward’s inclusion in the latest England Men’s Elite League team for matches against Sweden and Ireland.
