Exclusive: Blackpool, Bristol Rovers & Wycombe race to sign player who left Man City in 2013*

Blackpool, Bristol Rovers, Wycombe Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town are chasing Rochdale attacker Devante Rodney on a free transfer this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Former Manchester City youngster Rodney is out of contract this summer and his suitors are ready to offer the forward a return to the Football League.

Rodney, 25, who missed a large chunk of the start of the season through illness, has scored four goals in his last five games including a last-minute equaliser against Hartlepool on Easter Monday.

Blackpool, Bristol Rovers, Wycombe, Shrewsbury, as well as Exeter City and Carlisle United, are racing to sign Rodney when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

Rodney has only managed 16 appearances this season due to his illness, with all 16 coming in the National League.

And Rochdale have suffered in his absence, with the club currently sitting in 11th place in the table, with 56 points from their 42 matches so far. They have won just 15 of those 42 games, with 11 draws and 16 losses to their name.

When fit, versatile attacker Rodney has managed to help out on the goals front, having found the back of the net five times this season.

His four goals in his last five matches were key to a recent mini-winning run from Rochdale. Three successive victories were secured last month against Woking, Eastleigh and Maidenhead United, but the club are now without a win in their last two, having lost to Gateshead and drawn with Hartlepool United.

Up next for the mid-table side is a trip to Oldham Athletic on Saturday (6 April), who occupy ninth place in the National League table, just four points above Rodney’s Rochdale.

After netting a 96th-minute equaliser in Easter Monday’s draw at home to Hartlepool, Rodney is now looking forward to the trip to Oldham as he seeks to continue his fine run in front of goal.

The attacker, who spent a part of his youth career at Premier League giants Manchester City before leaving in 2013, now has over 60 Rochdale appearances to his name, but sees his contract at the club come to an end this summer, with many clubs in the English Football League reportedly interested in securing his services when the National League campaign concludes.

In other news, EFL giants could be forced to accept a striker offer.
