Adam Mahoney’s new role of Head of Data and Analysis was revealed in February
Bristol Rovers Head of Data and Analysis Adam Mahoney has confirmed that he has left the Gas after four years after only taking up the role in February as part of the club’s new-look recruitment structure.
Mahoney had been working in the analysis department, mainly in a matchday and training context, for three-and-a-half years after arriving to the Gas from Swansea City in 2020, but was promoted to Head of Data and Analysis two months ago.
George Friend also announced his retirement from playing to become the Gas’ Director of Football while Chris Spendlove – who had been overseeing recruitment following Eddy Jennings’ exit at the end of last year – was promoted from Chief Scout to Head of Recruitment.
On X, Mahoney wrote: “Yesterday was my last day at Bristol Rovers. What a rollercoaster the last 4 years have been. Been a pleasure to work with each and every player and member of staff. Bristol has become my home and I’ll never forget those memories of the final day of the League 2 season.”
What that now means for Rovers’ recruitment strategy for the upcoming summer transfer window is unclear but the significant scale of the task at hand has been well known for a good while. The Gas are expected to publish their retained list later today which will give a clearer indication of the number of players they’ll be left with for the start of summer but, with six loanees and 12 players out of contract, the expectation is that next season’s squad will look considerably different to the one that Rovers ended the 2023/24 campaign with.
Having worked up the ladder at Swansea City, Mahoney joined Rovers in March 2020 when Ben Garner was in charge before working alongside Paul Tisdale briefly and then Joey Barton, and he was part of the Scouser’s backroom staff during the League Two promotion season.
The Welshman, who spent time as part of the Northern Ireland Under-21 set-up, also worked alongside younger brother Lewis Mahoney in the analysis department before the latter joined Championship side Southampton in January as First-Team Set-Piece Analyst.
When Mahoney’s new role was announced in February, Rovers also posted a job advertisement for a new First Team Analyst for which applications have now closed.
Mahoney was referenced by Matt Taylor in his post-match interview after Saturday’s final day defeat at Wigan Athletic, as he said: “In terms of the recruitment aspect, ever since George and Chris and Adam have been in their roles that’s been working on behind the scenes and that won’t stop and that will accelerate a little bit and then you’re just waiting on the first moment of a signature on a contract and that’s what we look forward to.”
