Matt Taylor rued repeated mistakes once again by his Bristol Rovers side after a 3-1 defeat at Northampton Town
After familiar problems cost Bristol Rovers a 3-1 away loss at Northampton Town, Matt Taylor has reiterated that his team needs to change.
The visitors had the best chance to equalise in the first half, but Scott Sinclair’s curling shot went wide. The Gas gave themselves a mountain climb in the second half after giving up goals in the third and fortyth minutes that should have been avoided.
After a clever header across goal from substitute Elkan Baggott, Chris Martin scored his 13th goal of the season to cut the lead in half. Their response was adequate. However, Marc Leonard’s goal off a corner five minutes later sealed the win for the home team.
After receiving his sixth yellow card of the season, Taylor was forced to watch from the stands and gave off a frustrated vibe that has been all too common lately due to persistent problems. After the game, the Pirates manager had to choose his words carefully when he stated, “We have to change.” We cannot continue to say the same things while standing here. The league standings demonstrate that fans will notice it.
We’re definitely giving teams an advantage in that regard because of how prone we are to leaks, how soft we are, how many goals we give up, and how difficult it is for us to win games once we do.

In addition, Taylor said of the performance and game: “Similar to recent incidents. a terrible opening 45 minutes. We were unable to get close enough to the match. Throughout that first half, we were unable to maintain our composure or run with any intensity. We were maybe too often second best. We think those aims are really inadequate. Both are avoidable. A softness that has existed for a while is present.
“We were smarter in the second half. more deliberate. ran more forcefully. That was incredibly simple and brought the game back. Then we have to pay for a set piece.”
Rovers found it difficult to be consistent after playing brilliantly to overcome a 2-0 hole and win 3-2 away at Stevenage on Tuesday night. Granted, the midfield was patched up due to injuries and bans that affected the entire team, but it was still an instance of ongoing problems like giving up easy goals and frequently trailing balls to passes.
All of this suggests that there will be significant changes in the summer, but first the Gas need to win their remaining 13 league games in order to secure a top-four finish. Following the loss at Sixfields, a big source of annoyance will be that they lost the chance to close the gap with a team in the vicinity and lower the gap on another with Northampton leapfrogging the Pirates while Leyton Orient lost at home to Burton Albion.
