Police update on man who died in Bristol city centre

Officers investigating the death of a man in Bristol city centre on Friday have passed the details on to the Avon Coroner and say the death is not suspicious. Police were called to support paramedics who were battling in vain to save the man’s life near Bristol Crown Court in Small Street in the early hours of Friday morning, June 21.

The man was found collapsed and seriously ill at around 5.30am and emergency services were called. Paramedics called police at 5.40am after finding the man unresponsive, and he sadly died at the scene.

Bristol Live reported on Friday morning that police were investigating the circumstances around the man’s death, and at that point it was ‘unexplained’. A police cordon was placed across Small Street on Friday morning, and police appealed for any information about the man and how he ended up there.

Now, police have said their initial inquiries concluded that the man’s death is not suspicious, and a file will now be prepared by police for Avon Coroner, to conduct an inquest instead of a continuing criminal investigation.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police said the police are now trying to track down the man’s family, who are abroad. “The death of a man in Bristol this morning, Friday, June 21, is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner,” the spokesperson confirmed.

“The man was found critically ill in Bell Lane, off Small Street, in the early hours. Officers were called to support the paramedics treating him at about 5.40am, but sadly he died at the scene. Police are now trying to reach the man’s family, who are abroad, to inform them and arrange formal identification,” she added.
