Woman dies in two car collision near Ashton Gate

Stadium bosses say their thoughts are with the family of the Take That fan, as police appeal for witnesses

As the woman was being driven down a busy dual-carriageway on her way to the stadium for Take That’s performance on Sunday night, she was struck by a car. She died in the collision, and Ashton Gate Stadium has expressed their condolences to her family and friends.

After being carried to the hospital on Sunday, July 21, the woman—whom the police have not yet named—died from her wounds.
She was struck by a car travelling on the A370 Brunel Way overpass close to Ashton Gate at approximately 5:30 p.m., right as large crowds were beginning to arrive at the stadium for Take That’s second show of the weekend.

In a statement, the stadium said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this tragic time. We understand she was on her way to attend the Take That concert here at the stadium.”
The police have asked anyone who saw the crash to get in contact. A 60-year-old lady was detained by police at the site when they suspected her of driving while impaired by narcotics. Later, after an investigation, she was freed until further questions were answered.
A police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Bristol on Sunday night. Officers were called at around 5.30pm to a report of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on the A370 Brunel Way.
The pedestrian was brought to an institution. She regrettably passed away from her injuries despite the emergency services personnel’s best attempts. We have informed her next of kin and are sending our condolences to them during this trying time. A family liaison officer with specialised training will offer them help.

“We express our gratitude to drivers for their understanding and patience as officers conducted their investigations. “Please contact us at 101 and quote reference 5224148817 if you were in the area and witnessed the collision or have dashcam footage,” the spokeswoman continued.

For around three and a half hours, traffic coming into the city was prevented from crossing the Avon Bridge from Ashton Gate to Hotwells and was instead routed onto Coronation Road. This resulted in lengthy lineups back onto the Long Ashton bypass.
