Browning Middle School closes on Tuesday amidst ‘unresolved threats’

The Browning Middle School will be closed today, Tuesday, in the midst of several threats made to students and teachers at the school, Superintendent Rappold announced on the school’s Facebook page.

Rappold reported law enforcement has been able to identify a person involved in making the threats on Monday, however, come Monday night as staff was phoning home to parents, Rappold said two additional threats with lists identifying students were made. Blackfeet Law Enforcement has moved forward with separate investigations on these newest threats.

“For the safety of our students, staff, and community, Browning Middle School will be closed on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 due to these unresolved threats connected to a potential school shooting incident. In order to make sure that the issue is handled in a way that ensures everyone’s safety, we are taking these threats seriously and are collaborating closely with local authorities as well as parents and guardians,” Rappold stated.

The middle school is the only one that is closing today as of right now.

BROWNING, Mont. On Monday, Browning Middle School’s second threat was revealed by Rebecca Rappold, the superintendent of Browning Public Schools.

Regarding the threat posted on social media, Superintendent Rappold released a statement. Another threat referencing a school shooting incident was received by Browning Middle School today. The threat from today mentioned the date—September 26—as well as specific students and staff members who might be implicated, according to Rappold.

Rappold emphasized the district’s commitment to safety, saying that the well-being of students and staff is their highest priority. “Our district was made aware of the potential threat posted on social media this afternoon and Blackfeet Law Enforcement was contacted immediately. We are working with local law enforcement to assess and address the source and credibility of the threat and will provide more information as soon as it becomes available,” she said.

The district has activated its safety protocols through the BPS Emergency Operations Plan and will stay in a heightened state of alert until the situation is resolved.

“We acknowledge that parents, students, and members of our community are deeply alarmed and anxious about these kinds of threats. We are taking every safety measure to keep our schools safe, and as of right now, all pupils are safe,” Rappold continued.

As part of her efforts to keep the classroom safe, Rappold advised parents to have a conversation with their kids about reporting any questionable conduct to an adult.
