Kompany addresses Burnley’s interest in Maxime Esteve, Romain’

Burnley are working hard to add to their squad before the transfer deadline, manager Vincent Kompany has confirmed.

The Clarets have only brought in one player so far this month in the form of striker David Fofana, who has arrived on loan from Chelsea.

Kompany has, however, confirmed Burnley’s interest in Montpellier defender Maxime Esteve, but warns a deal is not yet in the offing.

When asked how confident he is of Burnley adding to their squad before Thursday night’s 11pm deadline, Kompany said: “It’s a good question, it depends on the hour you ask me. Seriously!

“There are moving pieces, I’m not going to deny it. The recruitment team is putting in a shift to try and make the squad stronger.

“There’s still a few calls coming in for our players as well, so we’ll see.

“I have been focused on the game against Man City [on Wednesday night] but I get the information at the end of the day.”

Kompany continued, “All I can say is that he’s not our player at the moment,” in reference to a possible trade for Esteve.

“I don’t think I can still say there hasn’t been interest, do you think? But the thing is, he’s not a player for us.

“I’m not able to say much more until then.”

Kompany also denied rumours that Burnley was considering a move for Hull City’s Romain Esse, the winger for Millwall.

“I can be really honest, we haven’t been active on that one, but I know the player is a good player,” he remarked.

There’s a chance that certain players who have had trouble getting consistent playing time this season will be let go.

This month, Connor Roberts and Manuel Benson have been connected to several moves; nonetheless, they are still at Turf Moor.

“I’m definitely not against keeping the group together because they’re all lads that I’ve come to know and have done everything that I’ve asked them to do,” Kompany responded when asked about the possibility of the two departing.

“I’m not even thinking that these guys need to leave. The only issue is that certain players—you can easily see who hasn’t played as much by looking at the list of players—want to play, and we have to respect that as well.

“A group that wants to play really hard and just focus on the one and only thing that matters right now, which is keeping this club in the Premier League, is all I want for the next 17 games.”
