Burnley was relegated to the Championship after a year of promotion due to failure to make an impact in the top flight. The Belgian manager, Kompany, refused to risk the club’s future by signing expensive Premier League players with large contracts.
Keys expressed surprise at the comments, pointing out that Burnley spent a lot of money last summer and should have gotten more bang for their buck.
He also criticised Kompany’s refusal to adapt the Clarets’ playing style.
“Burnley made a late-season push, but it was too late. Vincent Kompany’s fixation with playing ‘the correct way’ proved to be a mistake and ultimately their downfall. Burnley cannot ‘play’ in the major league. They don’t have the players to do it,” Keys stated on his blog.
“I saw Kompany declare that he didn’t want to risk the club’s future by paying his way into another season. Really?
“Who spent £111.05 million last summer, then?
“I have to say, if I owned Burnley, I’d have expected a better effort at staying up for that kind of money.”
Burnley have only 24 points from 37 Premier League games this season, but Kompany is not expected to lose his job.
