Surrey Police refers itself to watchdog after man dies in car crash in Camberley

Surrey Police said it had referred itself to the watchdog after a man died in a collision with a car in Camberley. The incident happened on the A30 London Road shortly before 10am on Saturday (September 14).

The man in his 30s, who was on foot, died at the scene. The driver of the car, who had stopped, assisted fully with police enquiries and no arrests were made, said a police spokesman.

The force has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because it had received reports during the hour before the collision “relating to a man walking in and out of the carriageway”.

This means the incident is being treated as a “death following police contact” which means it must be referred to the watchdog. Police thanked people who had so far come forward with information but it now wants “more specific” information about the movements of the pedestrian prior to the collision.

A police spokesperson said: “Were you on London Road in Camberley between the High Street and Lower Charles Street between 10am and 10:15am on Saturday, 14 September? Did you see a White man wearing a light grey top, blue jeans, and white trainers walking in the area during this time?

“We are also interested in tracing the movements of a black Skoda Fabia in the area between 10am and 1o:15am” South East Coast Ambulance service attended the scene and the road did not reopen until now.

People who have CCTV or dash cam or helmet cam footage which may have captured the incident, or even parts of it, can submit it to Surrey Police via its website, quoting PR/45240097245. If you do not wish to speak to police, you can call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
