POPULAR BLUE PENS DOWN THREE-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION

A pre-season supplemental selection back in 2019, Cottrell is now embedded in Michael Voss’ best 22 and will continue his time at Carlton until at least the end of 2027.

He’s played 56 AFL games since debuting in 2020, with the club stating Cottrell “personifies the Blues’ mantra of ‘being a good teammate’.

List boss Nick Austin added his belief Cottrell is still underrated amongst the competition.

“Matthew is the definition of ‘team first’, which is why he has the respect of everyone at our football club,” Austin said.

“We are always impressed by Matthew’s work ethic; his contribution to the team is highly valued, and we know that no matter what obstacles we present, he will rise to the occasion and support his teammates to the fullest extent possible.

“Matthew is not just a fantastic teammate but also a wonderful guy at the Club. He is adored both on and off the pitch and has forged a lot of deep friendships here.

“We are eager to watch him continue to progress, even though we know he is only beginning on what has been a remarkable football journey.”

Throughout his career, Cottrell has averaged 12 possessions per game and has scored goals in both of the games he has started this year.
