Sam Docherty brutal verdict to Life Member honours

At Carlton’s Hall of Fame ceremonies, four Life Members were inducted, including Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty.

At the Spirit of Carlton’s Hall of Fame event held at the Palladium in Crown tonight, Captain Patrick Cripps and cherished player Sam Docherty were awarded Life Memberships in the Carlton Football Club.

The award was given to Cripps and Docherty in appreciation of their ten years and one hundred games of service to the Club.

After 11 seasons and 185 games in the AFL, Cripps—the 2022 Brownlow Medallist, three-time All Australian, and four-time John Nicholls Medal winner—is 11 games ahead of Docherty, the 2016 John Nicholls Medallist, who played 155 games for the Navy Blue during the same time period at IKON Park.

As the most recent Life Member of the Club, Cripps was called to the platform and given a plaque by Carlton CEO Brian Cook.

On behalf of his teammate and close friend who was recuperating from a knee injury he had suffered during the Club’s Opening Round match against Brisbane, the former also accepted Docherty’s Life Membership award.

Craig Mathieson, a former member of the Board, and George Tahan, a longtime and devoted individual sponsor of the Club, were also awarded life memberships.

Harold Mitchell, who sadly passed away, was awarded Carlton Life Membership in recognition of his significant contribution to the team’s success off the pitch.

Sayers stated, “Patrick and Sam have both led the football team during arguably our most difficult time, and they are now unwavering in their resolve to get us to where we are aiming to be.”

It is quite appropriate that two outstanding athletes, admirable individuals, and most importantly, close friends, be granted Life Memberships to the Carlton Football Club in tandem.

“We congratulate Patrick, his wife Monique, and the Cripps family on their accomplishment tonight. Patrick cares deeply about not just the on-field success we are pursuing, but also about making the Carlton Football Club a consistent beacon of high performance, centred around a genuine culture that will live on well into the future.

Regarding Sam and what he has contributed to the Carlton Football Club, many things have been said. Sam has earned the title of Life Member, which is given to individuals who not only outlive their peers but also demonstrate a commitment to improving our football team both on and off the pitch. We hope Sam will continue to inspire us all in the future. We also congratulate his wife, Natalie, their daughter, Ruby, and the whole Docherty family.

“After Craig served the football club as a Director, we would also like to sincerely congratulate him on his Life Membership. We also like to express our gratitude to George and Harold for their long-standing support of the Blues.”
