VFL clubs lands signature of delisted Carlton utility

Sam Philp, a former Carlton first-round pick, has joined VFL club Port Melbourne after departing the Blues this off-season.

Philp’s career at Princes Park ended after four seasons and two appearances, with the Northern Knights product appearing in two games in his debut year with the club before suffering a succession of injuries.

During his Blues career, the 22-year-old battled rib, hip, groyne, and, most recently, foot injuries. Philp was placed on the club’s inactive list this year before returning through the VFL in August.

The midfield-forward hybrid was not offered a new contract for the 2024 season and has since joined Port Melbourne, where he joins former Western Bulldogs midfielder Robbie McComb and ex-Fremantle defender Tobe Watson

this off-season.

“I’m pumped to be joining the Borough in season 2024,” Philp said in a club statement.

“The club are really shaping up for a big year and I’m looking forward to contributing to that.”

Port Melbourne finished 15th in the VFL this season, with only six victories from 18 games.

When not needed at the Borough, Philp will play at the local level for Northern Football Netball League club Bundoora.

Philp, a product of Melbourne’s north-east, will play for the Bulls under Carlton legend Heath Scotland, who has been named Bundoora’s coach for next season.

“We are thrilled that Sam has committed to Bundoora,” Scotland added.

“Sam is a highly skilled player coming from the AFL system and compliments our talented playing list.”

In recent years, the Bulls have seen the likes of David Zaharakis, Neville Jetta, Sam Lloyd, and Shaun McKernan don the navy blue and white seasons.
