Celtic are on the hunt for a new striker and while they have competition for Kvistgaarden, he is still a live option.
Mathias Kvistgaarden may still be available for Celtic, according to rumours in Germany, since Schalke will struggle to match Brondby’s expectations.
Parkhead has shown a strong interest in the Danish striker, and it is understood that an approach worth more than £4 million was rejected in the summer. Brondby were eager to keep him and were rewarded with seven goals and seven assists from the 21-year-old before their domestic winter break.
It is expected that a genuine offer will be required to move the needle, and Football Scotland reported in December that Schalke had made the first practical move by contacting the players’ representation. While the Germans are still interested, TZ reports that they may struggle to come up with the cash needed to blow Celtic out of the water. That may be excellent news for Brendan Rodgers, who is still looking to sign a new striker this month despite Kyogo’s presence at the Asia Cup.
Rodgers intimated in his most recent transfer update that ‘one or two’ players could be arriving soon. “The players will get a little bit of time – they need that,” he stated before their game against Kilmarnock, which they won comfortably to kick off the winter break. “They’ll take a break to spend some time with their families,” he said.
“They’ll have some work to do while they’re gone, but it’s a good opportunity to reset before they go again.” We have a week off before we compete in the Scottish Cup. So we can get a lot done in that time.
“We’ll hopefully have some of the injured players back and maybe even some new players one or two in the door. Then we push on for the second half of the season. There will be no winter break next season and that’s a real shame.”
