Matt O’Riley believes that with improved game management, Celtic may advance farther in the Champions League.
Wednesday’s match against Atletico Madrid saw Brendan Rodgers’ team put in a scorching first half performance, and they rightfully led 2-1 at the time.
Throughout the first forty-five minutes, Celtic attacked with purpose and energy, with midfielder O’Riley at the center of it all. He set up Kyogo Furuhashi’s opening goal with a brilliant exchange of one-touch passes.
Eight minutes into the second half, a header from Alvara Morata set them back, and they were unable to fully match the forward play speed that Atletico manager Diego Simeone acknowledged his team had trouble managing in the first half.
Celtic’s first point of the Group E campaign came from a 2-2 draw, which also provided the team more confidence.
“Many positives, a very good performance for the most part,” stated O’Riley. Even though we occasionally lost control, particularly at the beginning of the second half, we played well overall and scored some excellent goals against a defensive club.
“Although we were a little upset not to receive three points, I believe there is plenty to look forward to because even one point on the scoreboard is a positive step.
