Player set for medical as Rodgers makes Celtic transfer call on deadline day’

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston is ‘en route’ to West Bromwich Albion to have his medical, according to a report from Daily Record.

After Mikey Johnston’s return to Celtic in the summer following his stint away from Celtic Park; Brendan Rodgers, who returned as manager, opted not to send the winger out again after considering his circumstances.

The 24-year-old is eager for more playing time, but it appears unlikely to materialize at Celtic as competition for places has intensified.

Rodgers expressed dissatisfaction with Johnston’s performance during a Celtic victory over Hibernian in December, emphasizing the need for a higher level of consistency from the winger if he aspires to secure more regular first-team football in the green and white shirt.

Following Mikey Johnston’s summer return to Celtic after his spell away from Celtic Park, manager Brendan Rodgers decided not to send the winger out again after taking his situation into account.

The 24-year-old is keen to get more playing time, but with the increased competition for spots at Celtic, that doesn’t seem likely to happen.

When the Celtics defeated Hibernian in December, Rodgers voiced his displeasure with Johnston’s performance, highlighting the necessity for the winger to be more consistent if he is to play more frequently in the first squad for the green and white jersey.

Good move

At Celtic, Johnston seems to be under a lot of strain, and the fans’ tolerance is apparently running thin. Everyone involved might gain from leaving the group. Peaking in his career ahead of him, the highly skilled Celtic Academy product might find the perfect home with a promotion-chasing West Brom team.

The likelihood of the Irish winger seeing regular playing time has decreased due to the return of injured player Liel Abada to the first squad and the signing of German winger Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna.

Johnston, who currently sits in fifth position in the Championship, is scheduled to have a physical with The Hawthorns in an attempt to strengthen their offensive lineup in preparation for a Premier League promotion. The winger is viewed as a crucial signing by manager Carlos Corberán, who hopes to improve the team’s offensive capabilities and promotion prospects.

May 2026 is when Johnston’s Celtic Park contract is scheduled to end.

As he approaches a permanent departure from Cardiff City, David Turnbull is presently undergoing his medical.
