Celtic confirm deal with Rangers star

Rangers and VFL Wolfsburg, of the Bundesliga, are in advanced talks regarding a season-long loan deal for Vaclav Cerny, a winger with experience against Glasgow rivals Celtic.

The 17-time captained Czech Republic international is reportedly a target on the Rangers Review’s recruitment radar this summer. Florian Plettenberg, a Sky Sports reporter based in Germany, claims the 26-year-old is “on the verge” of joining the Glasgow giants prior to the start of the new campaign.
Wolfsburg is reportedly prepared to approve the move as manager Philippe Clement seeks to expand his options following the loan return of Oscar Cortes, a Colombian player with a purchase obligation earlier in the transfer season. And after observing, astute fans on social media went into overdrive.

Cerny, who has a 2027 contract with Wolfsburg, finished the previous season with four goals in 22 league games. Three Dutch teams—Ajax, FC Utrecht, and FC Twente—are among his former employers. He previously forged a strong alliance with Danilo, the forward for the Light Blues, at Twente, where the Brazilian was on loan for six months.

Despite only starting one group stage match—the 1-1 draw with Georgia—he is a member of the Czech team competing in Euro 2024 and has scored six goals at the senior level for his nation. Prior to being able to add more players, Clement has been careful to emphasise the necessity to sell players, but it’s known that Todd Cantwell and Connor Goldson are both nearing the exit door and could potentially be followed by the likes of skipper James Tavernier, Sam Lammers and Ianis Hagi. That would free up some hefty wages to bring in fresh faces.
And even before he’s played a minute, rising star Cerny has won over Rangers fans. Video of the forward celebrating at Parkhead during his Ajax days has made the rounds online. In November 2015, Cerny played in the first team under manager Frank de Boer, and he scored the game-winning goal that eliminated the Hoops from the UEFA Europa League group stage against Celtic 2-1. Cerny came off the bench for the win.
Later, in front of a sizable away crowd, Cerny was seen directing the celebrations at full time. Now that the transfer has been confirmed, the £6 million player will aim to get started as soon as he returns to Glasgow.
