According to reports on Tuesday night, Adam Idah, 22, will likely be the next Irish player to join Celtic Park on a loan deal that will run through the end of the current campaign.
Rumour has it that Corkman Idah will sign a loan deal with Celtic, with the Scottish champions having the option to purchase the striker at the conclusion of the loan.
The fact that Celtic has only made one acquisition thus far in the January transfer window has left supporters clamouring for more. The transfer window closes on Thursday, and with Celtic hoping to hold off Rangers for the league title, there now seems to be a rush to bring in new talent in Glasgow.
Idah joined Norwich at the age of 15, and in 2019–20, the team played in the Premier League, he made his senior debut. Since then, Idah has made his breakthrough with the Ireland national team and the Canaries have seen ups and downs in the Premier League.
Idah’s transfer to Celtic is definitely exciting, but club legend Chris Sutton is worried about the demands the young forward will face in Scotland.
Chris Sutton cool on Adam Idah to Celtic
Sutton spent six seasons in the early 2000s as a player for Celtic, where he started the 2003 UEFA Cup final and won four SPL championships. Interestingly, he started his senior career with Norwich, spending four seasons there, and he has commented on Adam Idah’s potential move between the clubs.
There are striking similarities there, and Sutton wrote of his concerns for the Irishman as Idah’s departure seemed increasingly likely.
Sutton stated that Idah would have a difficult task ahead of him in trying to unseat the team’s current strike force because of the increased scrutiny at a team like Celtic:
If they can get a deal sorted, all parties should shake hands, wish each other well and move on. Celtic is going to be a very difficult and different experience for him, if that gets finalised. You have to robust mentally to cope with life in Glasgow.
My fear is that Idah will struggle to displace Celtic’s other strikers and isn’t any better than Oh Hyeon-gyu. He is a development player and I’m not sure that is what Celtic need either right now. I really hope he knows what he is getting himself into.
One man’s position in the team is undeniable, despite the fact that Celtic supporters have been clamouring for more funding to be allocated to the team during the transfer window. It’s difficult to see someone unseat Kyogo Furuhashi as the team’s top striker now that he has established himself in that role.
Oh Hyeon-gyu, a youthful striker from Korea, recently joined, placing Idah in a fiercely competitive environment.
Regarding the choice to leave Norwich behind, Sutton stated that, similar to many other supporters, he would be left wondering “what if?” after Idah’s four seasons at the team. Even though the timing seemed ideal for both sides, the Englishman said he believed Idah had never reached his full potential at Carrow Road and that the team would be sad to see him go:
I’ve done so many columns on Idah over the years. He has so much going for him; he’s strong, quick and has a great physical profile, but it always feels like he could give more. He doesn’t throw his weight around enough.
I’m not sure many Norwich City fans would struggle to disagree with the decision to let him go.
Both parties will likely feel dissatisfied with how it has gone, but there does come a time when he’s had enough opportunities, and he’s not made it happen for himself.
