Celts ran out 4-1 winners but there were a couple of incidents that required checking
Dermot Gallagher is adamant that Hibs cannot complain about Celtic’s penalty call during their crushing defeat at Parkhead last night.
Following a thrashing at McDiarmid Park by Brendan Rodgers, the Hoops were back to their best as they won 4-1, scoring two goals in each half. Soon after halftime, Luis Palma put the match out of sight with a spotkick following Lewis Stevenson’s tackle of Alistair Johnston in the box.
The flashpoint was missed by John Beaton at the time but after a VAR review, the whistler pointed to the spot and Palma converted. And examining the incident on Ref Watch this afternoon, ex-Premier League whistler Gallagher believes the right call was made in the end.
“He [Stevenson] catches him with the back leg as he slides in,” he said to Sky Sports. The referee is searching among a great number of bodies there. The referee fails to see Kyogo raise his arms in the air for a penalty. He is directed to look at the screen by VAR.
“Too many players, in my opinion, are in between. The person in the middle, Kyogo, is actually appealing for a penalty, but he is unable to see the direct queue. ‘I can’t see clearly,’ he would relay back to VAR. ‘Well, he’s taken his back leg and you’ll need to go and have a look,’ the VAR would then say. After examining it, he assesses the penalty.
Towards the end, Elie Youan’s cutback was converted by substitute Christian Doidge to give Hibs a consoling goal. Joe Hart, the keeper for the Hoops, raised the offside flag, but replays proved the linesman was correct to call it.
Gallagher added: “VAR checks it but credit to the assistant because this was an onfield decision and the onfield decision was a goal. Doidge is behind the goal, you see how tight it is. But credit to the assistant. He has kept his flag down and said ‘goal.'”
