‘Obvious interest’… Celtic want to sign £8.5m attacker in January

Celtic’s need to add quality in the January window has been made all too apparent after Brendan Rodgers’ side suffered their second defeat of the season on Saturday.

The 2-0 loss to Hearts means that if Rangers win their two games in hand, the Ibrox club go top of the Scottish Premiership.

And it appears that Celtic, through their pursuit of Swedish attacker Mathias Kvistgaarden, may be about to accomplish precisely that.

The 21-year-old forward, who is valued at £8.5 million, has been on Celtic’s radar for some time, and journalist Dean Jones thinks the club will make a move for him.

We know Rodgers wants them to be more ambitious and to push the envelope to see how far he can take this team, Jones stated [GiveMeSport].

“Considering the prices being touted the last time they were interested in him, £8.5m sounds a bit punchy.”

Therefore, I can appreciate people’s reluctance to think they could pull this off. However, there is clearly a stake in this.

Kvistgaarden is still a young player, so even though his goal totals this season aren’t particularly noteworthy, he has experience scoring goals.

In his 21 Brondby appearances this season, the young player has scored seven goals and created seven assists.

He only created four goals and found the back of the net ten times in 37 games the season before. His most productive season, though, came in 2021–2022, when he scored 15 goals and assisted on eight in 35 games for the Swedish team. [Transfermarkt]

Once more, this player is screaming “project signing” at me. I don’t think this player can lead Celtic forward in the manner that the supporters desire given his age and lack of European experience (he has never played football in a group stage).
