SFA announce Celtic VAR calls

This season, an independent Review Panel established by the SFA has endorsed each and every VAR decision made in Celtic’s domestic matches.

The season has been filled with controversial calls. Slobodan Rubezic was only booked for a dangerous attack on Kyogo Furuhashi in the most recent match against Aberdeen. In the previous away game against Ross County, it seemed that the still photo used to support the offside call against Daizen Maeda was taken after Paulo Bernardo had kicked the ball.

After reviewing 407 VAR checks with Premiership clubs yesterday, the SFA found that just three errors—much fewer than 1%—had been made.

Oddly, one of the errors was a double kick on an Aberdeen penalty that was awarded in stoppage time, denying St Mirren two points. John Beaton was the one who missed the double touch, and Euan Anderson on VAR was also blind to the infraction.

The Scotsman revealed the other two errors that occurred during Dundee matches:

Since the season began, there have been 407 VAR checks, 24 of which resulted in on-field reviews. The governing body established the IRP in advance of the season, which was the first complete campaign using the new video technology. Under the direction of authorities on the Laws of the Game, a panel comprising former players, managers, and coaches provides an analysis of VAR interventions and non-interventions.

The Scottish FA’s referees department convened with the 12 Premiership clubs on Thursday to discuss the performance of Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) in the first round of fixtures. Club representatives were provided with audio recordings of discussions between match officials and the VAR control room, during which explanations were provided regarding the handling of several significant match incidents.

On August 27, in Paisley, Miovski’s penalty kick equaliser in the tenth minute of stoppage time kept St Mirren from winning the league. After Miovski scored, there was a VAR review because Zach Hemming, the goalie for Saints, thought the North Macedonia striker had touched the ball twice after tripping during the penalty kick, but the goal was still awarded.

Steven McLean will referEe tomorrow’s match between Celtic and Motherwell with David Dickinson on VAR.
