Hartford Athletic have acquired goalkeeper Paul Walters on loan from MLS club FC Cincinnati ahead of the 2024 season opener this Saturday.
“Hartford has a strong roster and high aspirations for the upcoming season. I look forward to competing with the goalkeeping unit and helping the club reach its standards on the field,” said Walters. “This is a great opportunity for me to improve and become a better goalkeeper with this talented group. Just being here for a few days now, I can tell that the level is high and I’m determined to help this team win.”
Walters joins the Green and Blue after spending the 2023 season with FC Cincinnati 2 of MLS Next Pro, making 19 starts, 78 saves, and recording two clean sheets. He played with current Hartford defender Joey Akpunonu, who is also on loan from FC Cincinnati.
“We’re excited to add more talent to our goalkeeping unit with Paul,” said Head Coach and General Manager Brendan Burke. “He’s shown that he’s a smart and athletic goalkeeper with potential to breakthrough in MLS as he progresses. We expect him to compete for minutes and develop with this group.”
The 19 year old joined the FC Cincinnati Academy in 2019 as part of the program’s inaugural class. He played for the U17 and U19 teams before committing to Northwestern, where he played for a season before returning to FC Cincinnati to sign a Homegrown contract in January of 2023.
Hartford Athletic play their season opener this Saturday, March 9th at El Paso Locomotive FC at 9:00pm. You can watch the match on MyTV9, wtnh.com, or ESPN+.
