Charlton Athletic head coach Michael Appleton was not talking in the immediate aftermath of Miles Leaburn’s injury about recalling Daniel Kanu from his loan at Southend United.
The Addicks are set to find out the full extent of Leaburn’s hamstring injury at the end of this week.
The 20-year-old was forced off in the first half of last night’s 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town.
Charlton already have Chuks Aneke ruled out until the start of 2024, also with a muscle problem in the same area.
“I think when you are not playing league football it is normally a 24-hour recall,” said Appleton, when asked about bringing Kanu back to
“But, listen, we have got a good young kid on the bench (Micah Mbick). He’s pretty tidy. And we’ve got one (Patrick Casey) who scored five goals in the U23s the other night as well. There is a bit of talent there and a few options.
“Clearly in an ideal world you want the likes of Miles Leaburn and Chuks Aneke to be available at the top end of the pitch but we’ll have to cope without them for now and it’s an opportunity for those players who get the chance to do that.”
Manchester City loanee Slobodan Tedic came on for Leaburn and had two chances to score. Cheltenham keeper Luke Southwood turned one strike around the post and he also failed to keep an effort down from close range after the ball was turned back across by Alfie May.
“I was delighted with Teddy,” said Appleton. “I’ve asked questions of him over the last week or so. Demanded more off him and I’ve not seen that since I’ve walked through the door. I’ve not seen enough of him and I think he knows that. I made it clear. I think I got a bit of a reaction out of him today, which was pleasing.
“I can only be happy that he’ll want to do that on a regular basis and if that is the case then obviously he can be an asset to us.”
