Chelsea will happily fork out €40 million to sign 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, a target for Real Madrid.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Jeremie Frimpong is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Bayer Leverkusen full-back is also a target for La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid. But the Blues are ready to trigger his release clause worth €40 million to prise him away from the Bundesliga club.
The Rise of Jeremie Frimpong: A Productive Wing-Back
Jeremie Frimpong has established himself as one of the best full-backs in the Bundesliga since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in January 2021. The Dutchman excels while playing as a wing-back instead of a traditional full-back, with the position bringing the best out of his ability and masking his defensive deficiencies.
The 23-year-old has been highly productive under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso, especially this season. Frimpong has contributed to 17 goals in 22 appearances, finding the back of the net seven times while providing ten assists. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs.
Premier League bigwigs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United have shown interest in the Bayer Leverkusen full-back. But Chelsea might be the leading Premier League club chasing Jeremie Frimpong. Meanwhile, he is also a target for Real Madrid, although the West London giants are prepared to trigger his release clause of €40 million.
Chelsea or Real Madrid: Where Will Frimpong Land?
Chelsea’s interest in Frimpong is surprising, considering Mauricio Pochettino has two right-backs in his squad, one of them being the club captain. But a closer look reveals Reece James’s fitness travails in the last few years. Meanwhile, Malo Gusto has struggled to establish a foothold at Chelsea. So, the Blues should invest in a productive right-back, bringing Frimpong into the picture.
As for Real Madrid, the Merengues have been planning a 2024 summer move for Jeremie Frimpong for a long time. Dani Carvajal is on the wrong side of 30, with his performance levels dropping. So, it behoves Real Madrid to invest in a long-term successor to Carvajal, with the 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen full-back emerging as a viable target.
But with Chelsea ready to pay €40 million to secure Frimpong’s services, Real Madrid must respond quickly. Otherwise, Los Blancos will see the Dutchman moving to Stamford Bridge instead of the Santiago Bernabeu.
