Chesterfield Fc set clever target in transfer market ahead of EFL return..

The Spireites will be playing in the Football League for the first time in six years next season after winning the National League title.

But, unlike in the National League, clubs have to abide by financial fair play rules, known as Salary Cost Management Protocol (SMCP), which means teams can only spend a fixed percentage of the previous year’s turnover on player wages.

Director Ashley Kirk stated in a club interview, “We feel we are going to box clever and put the money where it is going to have the biggest impact on the team.”

“We have financial restrictions that must be followed. We must forecast the budget that we can actually have in the league and what we are allowed to spend using this year’s season ticket sales and fan base, so we are fortunate to have a tremendous fan base and home crowd.

“Although it won’t be the largest budget, it will be extremely competitive nonetheless. Within the limitations that govern our operations, we shall provide what we can.”

Paul Cook chose to focus on quality rather than quantity last summer, bringing in players like Will Grigg, Tom Naylor, and Michael Jacobs. This is probably the path they will take going forward.

“We anticipate the team we field next year being better than the team this year, either through training, player development, bringing junior players in or sensible recruitment,” Kirk stated. “Paul Cook is a big advocate for year-on-year improvement.” There will be a few adjustments and prudent hiring.

“We may be looking at some recruits here and there, but we are operating where we have to have a squad of 22 (outfield players) plus goalkeepers and under-21 players. Everyone knows our squad, everyone knows we are really strong.”

“Everyone is aware of our team and our strength; we may occasionally consider recruiting new players, but for the purposes of our operation, we need a roster of 22 outfield players, plus goalkeepers and under-21 players. You are only permitted to have this many players in your squad. That instills discipline in your recruitment process, something the National League lacks.
