Chesterfield manager Paul Cook will be ‘ruthless’ with players ahead of EFL return

The Spireites, who will be playing in League Two for the first time in six years, have a handful of players out of contract this summer.

The Blues, who have lost all of their last four since winning the title, finish this season at home to Maidenhead United.

Assistant manager Danny Webb responded, “I think when you are at a club like Chesterfield every game is massive for a player,” when asked if any players were fighting for their careers.

“With his expertise, the manager is dependable and gets along well with the players, but he will also be brutal. He desires to triumph in matches. The players are aware of that for the entire season, not just right now. Nobody is ever safe when wearing a shirt, and this will always be the case. Every game is a cup final for other teams, not because of the recent lack of winning form.

“It is the same as it was at the beginning of the season, in my opinion. It’s the same, exactly. Everyone connected with Chesterfield is under pressure, but they have handled it well this season, which is why the trophy was awarded with five games remaining.

Regarding the need to let players leave, Webb continued, “That’s the cruel part of football.” These discussions do and will take place. We haven’t yet had such discussions about what’s happening particularly with individual players or with other players in general.

Chesterfield may already be a few steps ahead of some other clubs in that regard because their early title win allowed them to start planning for the upcoming season sooner than usual.

In order to gain an advantage if we were to advance or make the playoffs, among other things, Webb clarified, “We have had a tonne of meetings, even before the title was confirmed. This is not to be pretentious. These have been continuing meetings. While the respite will be appreciated, business as usual will resume. It all starts anew with pre-season friendlies, potential signings, and lads without contracts. We’ll play our first preseason game soon, most likely in Matlock, and nobody will recall this. I would advise everyone to enjoy the upcoming weeks since everything will revolve on our first League Two match, our goals, and possible signings.
