Fans have been voting ahead of the awards event at the SMH Group Stadium on April 17.
Let’s take a look at the likely contenders.
The front-runner for the prize, and our choice. With a spectacular 13 goals and six assists, the midfielder has contributed, making this his finest season ever statistically. With the exception of one league game, the 32-year-old has started every game and has demonstrated incredible consistency. Not only have his goals and assists been impressive, but his work ethic, leadership qualities, and game management skills have also drawn notice. We believe he is the league’s top centre midfield player. He has to be among the top free agents the team has ever signed. And he’s certainly capable of adjusting to League Two, having competed as recently as last season in the Championship. There will be an abundance of
Will Grigg
With his 25 goals, Chesterfield has blazed to the title and promotion. Before scoring 18 goals in his final 24 games before having his season ended by a hamstring injury, he went five games without scoring, which was his longest goalless streak. The Northern Irishman is a great lone striker, something we probably didn’t realise until he arrived. We all knew he would score goals. Despite his little stature, he is incredibly strong and adept at making the ball stick. He is underappreciated for the timing of his runs, his deft box movements, and the way he uses his body to fend off opponents.
Jamie Grimes
It was appropriate that the captain, who has set an exemplary example, scored Chesterfield’s 100th league goal in their championship-winning game. He had started every league game of the season prior to getting sent off on Boxing Day, and when his suspension was served, he kept up his incredible record. In addition to dominating in the air, he was in charge of setting up the Spireites’ offensive line from behind. Pre-season specialised training has helped him become quicker on the grass.
Liam Mandeville
With seven goals and an incredible 19 assists this season, the previous year’s winner of this accolade has had another successful year. His goals this season are a little fewer than they were last, but he has correctly noted that he has played right-back for part of the campaign! Mandeville’s deliveries have been crucial to Chesterfield’s more than thirty goals from corners and free kicks. Having played in 41 league games, he is a player who consistently puts in a lot of work and is always available.
Mike Jones
An improbable winner simply because some of the other players have played more often and had absurdly successful seasons in terms of numbers. But he also boasts a fantastic statistic of his own: Chesterfield has only lost twice in 21 starts this season. Although he wasn’t part of the team at the beginning of the campaign, it quickly became clear how important he is. One more who plays every game like it’s his last and tangles with every blade of grass.
Armando Dobra
Having not scored until the ninth game of the season, he had a somewhat poor start by his standards, but he has made up for it with 11 goals and 10 assists. As the campaign went on, he continued to improve, and on the day the title was confirmed, he was outstanding. Paul Cook and his team have done a great job managing him. The goal was to get him more games after his 27 league appearances in the previous season, and they succeeded with 43 appearances in all competitions.
