Paul Cook ‘angry’ at Chesterfield players and vows to take drastic action

The Spireites led 1-0 early on through Joe Quigley’s 11th goal of the season but they conceded twice in the second-half.

Town won the title last weekend but Cook wants everyone to keep their foot to the floor and achieve 100 points.

Coach Danny Webb stated, “To go home as champions is great, but for the manager that is not enough at the moment.” “He wants us to continue to play to the very last game of the season with great standards and results. We want to surpass that 100 point barrier as quickly as possible and we don’t want to lower our standards.

“We are disappointed, especially the manager, who expressed his disappointment in a few angry words. We all share the same philosophy, which is that everyone’s standards should remain high, we should keep winning, and we should continue this season into the next.”

“We should have been 4-0 up at half-time but we weren’t,” Webb remarked of the performance. A few one-on-ones went our way, and Joe Quigley scored a header. We are upset because we had numerous opportunities to win, but we handed up the ball in unfavourable spots.

We were incredibly impressive in the opening 20 minutes, but by halftime, we had become a little careless. At the break, the message was to not give them anything to cheer about. They came close to scoring, but Ryan Boot made an excellent stop.

“And then, at approximately the halfway point, we handed up the ball in similar situations for the two goals. It is quite upsetting to concede after two counterattacks; it is akin to conceding a few goals at Halifax.

“Jersey won today fair and square. Fair play to them.”

“We will be looking to bounce back against Kidderminster after a disappointing day.”

At 1-0 in the first half, Chesterfield’s pleas for what appeared to be a stonewall penalty were denied when James Berry’s effort was handled. Cook was booked as a result of that choice.

“We are disappointed that the referee was in such a position, but we are fortunate that we can look back on it—the referees don’t get that,” Webb stated. It was obvious he used maybe both hands to handle it. That’s just the way things are. You probably want to believe that you receive a good number of decisions—both for and against—during the season. That, in my opinion, was definitely against us.Although we prefer not to admit fault, we had opportunities to widen our lead.
