After bringing in Kane Drummond from Macclesfield, experienced striker and League Two title winner, Paddy Madden, joined from Stockport County.
We spoke to journalist Sam Byrne, who covers Stockport County for the Manchester Evening News, to find out more about the Blues’ latest signin
A goal scorer! Apart from the obvious, he is a true leader; even when he isn’t chosen, he leads like a pro and sets the tone for the side. He is a person who fully commits to the team he plays for, holds himself to a high level, and expects the same of his teammates. In general, he’s just a shrewd addition to a team that was recently promoted and hopes to return there. He is a player who has established himself as a winner and who will lead by example for the other players on the team.
It came down to Paddy being able to negotiate a longer agreement and better security elsewhere, despite the fact that a new deal was discussed and offered. Stockport was limited to a one-year contract, and that was that. Stockport’s strategy in League One for the upcoming season would heavily emphasise youth; in response to Madden’s departure, they signed young players Cody Johnson and Ethan Pye to three-year contracts.
It’s been quite painful. Although the term is overused in football, he is a true icon of the team having led Stockport to two titles in three years after moving up from League One to the National League in 2021. He was well-versed in the club, had a great rapport with the supporters, and is unquestionably “number nine,” who the fans always seem to lean towards.

Some Chesterfield fans might have concerns over his age, can you ease their worries?
He’s never been the quickest, so his age hasn’t really impacted that side of things. What I can say is he’s incredibly fit, rarely injured for any sort of extended spells, and is a proper runner in the side who will pop up all over the pitch. I’ve no concerns at all really about his age, especially as he’s continued to adapt his game and evolve as a striker consistently.
