Ahead of the trade deadline, the Chicago Bears agree to a huge deal for key player.

Justin Fields will not play for the Bears against the Saints in Week 9. An update on the quarterback’s improvement was provided by Matt Eberflus.

To strengthen their pass rush, the Bears have consented to a deal. The club acquired defensive end Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a second-round selection, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Chicago.

Being one of the best pass rushers in the league, Sweat will benefit the Bears defensive line, which has had difficulty applying pressure to quarterbacks in opposition. This season, Sweat has 10 TFLs, 6.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. All of the Bears’ defensive linemen have combined for 6.5 sacks, 21 TFLs, and one forced fumble so far this season. With two sacks, Yannick Ngakoue is the group leader.

Currently in his sixth season in the NFL, Sweat has 35.5 career sacks, 47 tackles for loss, and nine forced fumbles. Occasionally, Sweat gained an advantage by rushing in front of the extremely gifted DE Chase Young. Nevertheless, Sweat has continued to contribute at a high level even in Young’s injury-related absences. There’s no reason to think Sweat won’t be able to continue producing against Ngakoue at this point.

The Bears finished last in the NFL in 2022 with 20 sacks, thus defensive end was a need going into this season. Ngakoue, DeMarcus Walker, and Rasheem Green were signed by general manager Ryan Poles in an attempt to remedy the problem, but it wasn’t enough to move things along. The Bears are dead last in the league after eight games.

The Bears have the largest cap space in the NFL in 2024, at $95.7 million, according to Spotrac.
