Montez Sweat Makes Surprising Revelation About Potential Extension

After selling the Washington Commanders to a group led by NBA legend Magic Johnson and billionaire businessman Josh Harris earlier this year, Daniel Snyder’s tenure in our nation’s capital came to an end.

The organization traded edge rusher Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, just before the trade deadline, in exchange for a second-round pick in the next year’s draft.

A Bears squad that has struggled terribly this season, particularly on defense, could benefit from sweat.

But according to Clay Harbor, he appears uncommitted about negotiating a contract extension.

Montez Sweat #90 of the Washington Commanders takes to the field prior to a game against the Philadelphia Eagles at FedExField on October 29, 2023 in Landover, Maryland.

The Chicago Bears, who are 2-6, are among the bottom of the league in a number of important defensive metrics. They just suffered a 30-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, allowing Justin Herbert to complete 31 of 40 pass attempts for 298 yards and three touchdowns.

With eight games played so far this season, Sweat—the No. 26 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft—has 6.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles.

At the age of 27, he presents himself as a potential future building block for Chicago, should he choose to remain with them after this season.

The Bears have to decide where they want to go with QB Justin Fields, who played well in Week 4 and Week 5 but struggled greatly in his next game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fields has been out ever since with a thumb injury, and Tyson Bagent has filled in under center, completing 70.0 percent of his passes this season
