Bengals Running Back Announces Retirement’

The 33-year-old spent his entire career in the AFC.

Cincinnati — Rex Burkhead, a former running back with the Bengals, is retiring.

On Monday, the 33-year-old revealed the news. In 42 career games, Burkhead ran for 375 yards and three touchdowns while playing for Cincinnati for the first four seasons of his career.


He was selected by the Bengals in the 190th overall sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In Cincinnati, he was mostly a member of the special team.

Following the 2016 season, Burkhead signed a free agent contract with the Patriots. Over the course of his four seasons in New England, he won one Super Bowl (LIII). In 41 regular season games, he caught 96 passes for 856 yards and seven scores, and by the end of his career, he had 1,026 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

After departing New England, Burkhead lived in Houston for two seasons (2021–2022) and was not a member of the team in 2023.
