Brian Schaefer, a defender, has signed a contract with FC Cincinnati 2, the team announced today. The terms of the contract were kept confidential per club policy.
In the first round of the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, FC Cincinnati selected Schaefer from the University of South Florida at pick no. 27 overall. Schaefer was a player for the Bulls from 2020 to 2023, appearing in 53 games with 44 starts.
The product of Atlantic Beach, Florida received an American Athletic Conference All-Rookie pick in 2020 after tallying three assists and five goals while playing for South Florida. AAC Second-Team All-Conference in 2022 Schaefer earned the honor after playing 16 starts in 17 games, tallying two goals and two assists.
Schaefer was a great midfielder at Fletcher High School before joining the Bulls for college. In his senior year, he scored 19 goals and contributed 26 assists. Schaefer was twice selected to the All-First Coast team and guided Fletcher to the 2020 1-6A regional semifinal.
Schaefer was part of FC Cincinnati’s traveling party for preseason training in Clearwater, Florida and played 45 minutes in a friendly against Austin FC on January 26. Schaefer and FC Cincinnati 2 open the MLS NEXT Pro season on March 17 at Scudamore Field at NKU Soccer Stadium.
