This summer, Luis Binks would be a good permanent addition to Coventry City, but only on a cheap contract as a backup centre back.
Although Luis Binks, a defender, has occasionally shown his abilities at Coventry City this season, the summer acquisition of the Bologna native has not gone as planned.
The English defender attended Tottenham Hotspur’s academy before moving overseas to Bologna in the summer of 2020, where he failed to get playing time at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
As a result, he has gone on loan, most notably to Championship team Coventry in the summer, who are now aiming for a top six finish after losing to Luton Town in the previous season’s play-off final.
He has, however, had difficulty getting inside the Coventry Building Society Stadium, raising questions about whether the team should sign him permanently after his loan period expires.
Coventry City supporter Neil Littlewood of FLW believes that signing defender Binks on loan would be a smart move for the team as a third-choice defender, but not for the reported fee his parent club is requesting.
“You can see he’s got all the talent to be a competent Championship defender, if not lower Premier League,” he remarked. “But, Binks is a bit of an odd one.”
“He has excellent ball control and neatness. He doesn’t back down from a challenge or fear of getting his hands dirty. He’ll fling himself around a bit. Although Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitching have been outstanding, he hasn’t had the game time I would have anticipated.
“Don’t get me wrong; I believe he is intelligent and has performed well for us. Although Bologna is quoting a price that is too much for such a center-back, Robins appreciates the ball-playing style that he brings to our system. If we’re getting him on a long-term contract, I’d spend between £2 and £3 million, maybe even £4 million at the very most.”
“Thats a lot of money on a third-choice centre-half, so the deal has to be right.”
